  1. It was left to jazz musician with a pop following, Ella Fitzgerald, to call new attention to the songs of the cream of American popular composers, with Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook, the first of several such albums, and quite probably the inspiration for whoever coined the phrase “Great American Songbook.” So maybe a better choice for an Ammons release for the song.
  2. referencing The Groups Of Kai Winding And Sonny Stitt - Early Modern, LP, Album, RE, JG , JG Regarding the catalog number with hyphen in Notes above, my copy has no hyphen on the front cover, but a hyphen on the back cover, and hyphens on both sides of the label.
  3. A sparkling set from pianist Richard Wyands – and a great demonstration of that soulful flow he's really unfurled strongly in later years – captured here in an obscure trio outing from the late 70s! Wyands' is part of a small number of players who can be lyrical, yet forceful at the same time – a mode that we might link to the Cedar Walton school of piano – but which is voiced here.
  4. The Voice of America, of course, was manipulated by the CIA, and the CIA was selling its own brand of culture wars -- America was the home of abstract expressionist art and modern jazz. daring art forms that were anathema to the communists. This might have been a tougher sell at home, where artists were generally suspected of being communists.
  5. Both Gene Am mons and Sonny Stitt are on tenor in the front, working with the respect and confidence they'd forged together on other co-led sessions from the time – and Jack McDuff's a great addition to the set, playing Hammond with his newly-lean tone, and really helping things move along nicely. Drummer Charlie Persip has a nicely booming.
  6. History. The label was founded by Austrian-born American citizen Emil Edward Shalit (24 December – 23 April ). It is unclear whether Shalit set up Melodisc initially in New York City, where he lived. Melodisc began trading in London in August , and soon became established as one of the first—and, at the time, the largest—independent record labels in the UK.
  7. Early Modern consists of a dozen sides originally released by Royal Roost and Roost on ten-inch 78rpm records, later issued on Kai Winding All-Stars*, Sonny Stitt All-Stars* - Modern Jazz Spectacular, and now re-issued in this re-recorded fashion by Jazztone with every effort made to enhance the sound without in any way interfering with the natural tonal quality of the music itself/5(3).
